What Is Reiki?

reiki

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning “Universal Life Energy.” It is an alternative therapy commonly referred to as healing energy. Reiki is a healing technique that emerged in the late 1800’s which activates the body’s natural healing process. It allows positive energy to revive and repair, promoting a natural balance between mind, body, and spirit. It is said to involve the transfer of universal energy from the practitioner’s palm to the patient. This medicine aims to improve the flow of energy and remove energy blocks in a similar way that acupuncture or acupressure does. Improving the flow of energy can enable relaxation, reduce pain, speed healing, and improve overall well-being. When used in conjunction with other rehabilitation and medical practices, Reiki can decrease recovery time and lessen side effects.

Benefit of Reiki may include:

  • Increased relaxation and stress reduction
  • Increased energy levels
  • Strengthening of the immune system
  • Increased healing and recovery
  • Calming of emotions and mental clarity
  • Clearing of energy blocks and restoration of proper flow of energy
  • Increased speed of recovery from surgery or sports injuries

Acceptance of Reiki in institutions comes in part because it is so easy to incorporate into the clinical setting. It requires no specific setting, technology, or preparation. Reiki is a touch therapy, and RNs, Physical Therapists and other professionals routinely touch patients as part of their job. If they are Reiki-trained, every time they touch a patient, the patient automatically receives Reiki energy. Since long, formal sessions are not required to support a patient with Reiki therapy, opportunistic mini treatments in the normal course of patient care make Reiki very easy to incorporate.

Reiki treatment is a supportive tool for use as a complement to conventional medicine, and is increasingly being offered in hospitals, medical care and therapeutic settings. Reiki treatment should not be a substitute for regular medical care from a qualified professional.

Northeast Portland SportsCare Physical Therapy offers Reiki by Jana L. Port a PTA and Usui Holy Fire III Reiki Master. She has been a Reiki Master/Teacher for two years and has enjoyed giving and receiving the benefits of Reiki to many amazing people!
